HISTORY
The Spartanburg Spartans
AAU Basketball Program was created in February 2008 as a spin-off of Mr.Thalassinos' church Basketball Ministry program
as a charitable organization to provide mentoring, educational assistance, basketball skill training, and competition to male
student-athletes, ages 17-19 in the Upstate, SC area.
We consist of one 19U team, which is made up
of players representing 9 upstate high schools. Through the efforts and contributions of our players
and sponsors, it is our goal to provide the best mentoring and basketball experience possible for everyone involved.
We
will always strive to provide all prospective male student-athletes of the state of South Carolina a more enhanced 19U and
competitive basketball experience.
In 2010, we are expanding our organization to include a 10U team. This
will be a developemental team as well as a competitive one. Our hopes are for this team to participate in 4-6 events
each year.
We are responsible for the actual entry fees and travel expenses (lodging, meals, transportation,
etc.,) for the tournaments we attend, which are quite costly to provide for. In addition to seeking sponsors,
we also host fundraising events throughout the year to meet our expenses.
We are active members of the Amateur
Athletic Union (AAU), one of the largest non-profit, volunteer sports organizations in the United States and is dedicated
exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs for youth, and provides registered
members with insurance and access to their organized events.
Spartanburg Spartans Basketball is a non-profit
organization incorporated by the State of South Carolina.
